Description:

Also known as the Stone Pine, our Pine Nut trees, or conifers are the variety Pinus pinea. This is the tree used for major production in the Mediterranean regions of Europe. They produce large cones that are filled with the little sweet pine nuts. Cones will begin to develop in 5 years when the tree has some size and strength. One Cone holds about 50 nuts.

Pinus pinea is very tolerant of wide ranging conditions, strong winds and even a bit of salt spray. Poor soils and heavy soil and of course stony soils. A cool winter is best, they are a conifer - they like a bit of chill.

Trees will max out at a height of 10 - 12 metres, They have a beautiful shape, and due to this are also referred to as the Umbrella pine.
